Nonprofit that rescues marine animals faces uncertainty over federal funding

MAKAPUU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A private non-profit organization that has been rescuing and caring for endangered and threatened marine animals in Hawaii is preparing for possible cuts in federal funding that has hit other agencies.
Hawaii Marine Animal Response is currently caring for two sea turtles that were injured when they were entangled in fishing line. The two threatened animals are recovering at HMAR’s recently-opened turtle care center in Makapuu.
“This is a turtle that came to us about a week ago,” said HMAR animal care manager Taylor Prostor, as she showed one of the turtles swimming in a circular tank at the care center.
“Really tight entanglement of fishing line around the right front flipper, so we’ve been doing work, more conservative therapy, so treating the wound.”
