Uckfield charity helps rescue bears from cage at Armenian bus depot

Twobearsareenjoyinganewlifeoffreedomafterbeingrescuedfromyearsofcaptivity.
Max,aSiberianbear,andMinnie,aSyrianbrownbear,werediscoveredinasqualidcageatabusdepotinArmeniain2018andwererescuedbyUckfield-basedcharityInternationalAnimalRescue(IAR)anditsArmenianpartner,theFoundationforthePreservationofWildlifeandCulturalAssets(FPWC).
Therescuefollowedayear-longefforttopersuadetheircaptortoreleasethem.
AlanKnightOBE,presidentofIAR,said:“Thecagedoorhadbeenweldedshut–aclearindicationthat,haditnotbeenforourmercymission,thetwobearswouldhavebeenkeptinthatcagefortherestoftheirlives.
“Thishasbeenanemotionaldayforeveryone.Thebearswerebeingkeptindeplorableconditionsandweweredesperatetosetthemfree.
“Weknewitwouldbeachallengingrescuebecauseofthesizeofthemalebear.Heisthebiggestbearwe’verescuedtodate.
“NowwecanworktogiveMaxandMinniethelifeandthelovingcaretheydeserveaftersomanyyearsofmisery.”
